St. George’s, Grenada, September 28, 2004 - - The first consignment of relief goods from the Keppel Foundation reached Grenada on Friday, September 24th. This shipment included drugs, medical supplies, and basic medical equipment to meet the initial primary health care needs of a displaced population of 10,000 persons for a time period of 3 months, without medical facilities. The humanitarian aid is to help alleviate the primary health care problems caused by the violent hurricane that hit the country early this month. Hurricane Ivan has killed more than 60 people and left thousands homeless across the Caribbean. The Foundation has also dispatched an assessment team to St. George’s to consult with the Grenadian authorities on the needs of specific medications and other relief items, as well as post emergency school and counseling programs for students pending the reopening of the schools. The team met with Dr. the Honorable Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada, on Friday, September 24th, to express their profound sympathy and full support to the Government and the people of Grenada during this trying time. As a private funding body of scholarships, fellowships and grants for highly qualified individuals, institutions and projects in education, science, culture, youth, and ICT, the Keppel Foundation is committed to helping the socially and/or financially disadvantaged in the developing countries to be more competitive in life and go for their career goals based on their talents, passions and personal brilliance. It advances their social leadership and economic status to improve their own homeland as well as the greater community of the world.
