Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries, Public Utilities and Energy Hon. Gregory Bowen
The Government of Grenada stands by the statements made by the Minister for Legal Affairs Hon. Elvin Nimrod. The government respects the
decision of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission but still believes that a dangerous precedent has been set. The government is not
criticising the Judicial and Legal Services Commission but is pointing out that this outcome may open the door for special interest groups
with their own agendas to dictate policy for the country which may not benefit the majority of Grenadians.
The Government also objects to Opposition members insinuations that we do not respect the Judicial and Legal Services Commission. In fact,
the government has waited patiently and quietly on the decision of the Commission in stark contrast to the Bar Association and the Opposition
who publicly demonstrated, and publicly attacked Mr. Hugh Whildman, in an effort to stop his appointment.
Further, the Government refutes the Bar Association’s statement which alleges that the judges agree with their protest action. In making this
statement the Bar Association is implicating the judiciary in what amounts to be illegal actions. These protest actions taken by lawyers can be
termed as Illegal for two reasons. Firstly, they opted to stay away from court while cases were being called, and secondly they opted to
demonstrate publicly while a state of emergency was in effect.
