The Department of Youth Development in the Prime Minister’s Office, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Caribbean Centre and the Housing Authority of Grenada, officially launched the Commonwealth Youth Volunteer Corps this morning (Tuesday 15th February, 2005) at the Ministry of Education Conference Room.

The teams will conduct work in the parishes of St. George, St. David and St. Andrew.

Regional Director of the CYP Caribbean Centre Mr. Armstrong Alexis says he is very pleased to be able to undertake such an initiative and praised the Department of Youth Development in Grenada for seizing the opportunity to work along with CYP in this regard.

Coordinator of Youth in Grenada Mr. Cecil Greenidge expressed his appreciation to Mr. Alexis and the Housing Authority of Grenada for their cooperation with the Youth Department to ensure this project is a success.

"I wish to say thanks to my dear friend and counterpart Mr. Alexis for taking such a bold step to extend a helping hand to Grenada and for coordinating in the different Commonwealth islands so that we can have a contingent of young people to volunteer their services here... the Housing Authority of Grenada also needs to be thanked for their continued efforts to collaborate with us in this venture."

The young men are being accommodated in tents provided by the Special Service Unit (SSU) on the compound of the Youth Development Centre in Morne Rouge, Grand Anse.
