Ministry Of Agriculture receives $600,000 US worth of seeds

The President of the Grenada Conference of Seventh Day Adventist, Dr. Clinton Lewis, handed over seeds worth $600,000 (US) to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry and Fisheries Lana McPhail at a brief ceremony on the St. George’s Port. Also present at the ceremony were Pastor Ashton O’Neil, Director of Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA); Pastor Leo Prince, Head of the Building Programme; and other officials of the Ministry.

Dr. Clinton Lewis in his remarks said "Since the passage of Hurricane Ivan, the Adventist Church has been working with our partners around the world, because we wanted to play an integral role in the rebuilding of our Nation. The seeds you see today come from Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), our world partner."

Director of the Washington-based ADRA, Pastor Ashton O’Neil, said: "Ever since Ivan struck on September 7, the Church has been trying to assist those who are in need. The Seventh Day Adventist Church has been in the business of helping people for over 100 year. Today we move in another direction."

Noting that agriculture is a very important sector in the Grenadian economy, Pastor O’Neil said that assistance to farmers is essential. As a result, of the 106 barrels donated, farmers will receive 85, while the remaining 21 barrels will be distributed to Church members.

To date the Seventh Day Adventist Church has distributed 600 tons of food items, clothing and building material, as well as built or repaired 124 houses across Grenada.

Permanent Secretary McPhail expressed appreciation on behalf of the Government of Grenada, noting the seeds will help in the ongoing resuscitation of the agricultural sector.
