Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell met with G. Robert Blanchard Chairman of The Grenada Electricity Company Ltd. (Grenlec) and Managing Director of Grenlec Mr. Vernon Lawrence today March 9th. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Grenlec for its quick and effective response to in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan. He also noted the good working relations between Grenlec and the Government of Grenada saying that this helps with maintaining an all round good working atmosphere in the country. Managing Director of Grenlec Mr. Vernon Lawrence said the company is especially thankful to the Government for negotiating with the Cuban team of technicians to remain in Grenada to assist Grenlec with connectivity. Mr. Lawrence noted that over 200 transformers were repaired by the Cuban team and this resulted in a savings to Grenlec of time and money. He added that the Cuban team is now playing more of a supervisory role in the repair of transformers. Prime Minister Mitchell offered to look into further training for Grenlec’s staff through a Government to Government arrangement if the company deemed this necessary. The prime minister also requested a meeting with the staff of Grenlec in order to personally thank them for their efforts. Already 92 (ninety two) percent of the island’s electricity supply has been restored and Grenlec estimates that the entire island will be reconnected by the end of April.
