Youth Officer attends Caribbean Adolescent Leadership-Building Workshop
Youth Officer from the Department of Youth Development in the Prime Minister’s Office, Ms. Jenner Charles is attending a Caribbean
Adolescent Leadership-Building Workshop in Trinidad.
The event which is an initiative of Xchange, a movement started in the Caribbean for bringing about positive behaviour change among young
people and adults will see participation from the rest of the Caribbean and Latin America.
Ms. Charles is among a delegation of three representing Grenada at the event. Other representatives include personnel from GRENSAVE and
GRENCODA. They left the island yesterday (Sunday 13th March, 2005) and will return next Sunday (20th March, 2005).
Whilst in Trinidad they will attend sessions on a number of topics relevant to youth development and empowerment. These include Leadership
skills, Conflict Resolution and Tolerance, Diversity, Self-esteem and Gender Awareness.
Xchange was developed out of concern for youth development and identity in the Caribbean and more specifically, because of the concerns
about the rising levels of HIV/AIDS and violence perpetrated by and against children in the Caribbean.
The idea was first conceived by Machel Montano and a number of other entertainers in Trinidad, who approached UNICEF with the idea. The idea received support from UNICEF and since, the governments of the Caribbean including Grenada have also given their support.
