Prime Minister Mitchell meets with UK Secretary of State Increased aid and budgetary support could soon be coming to Grenada from the United Kingdom. British Secretary of State with responsibility for Caribbean Affairs, Hon. Hillary Benn has promised to ensure that British and European Union governments treat Grenada’s recovery efforts with importance. Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt. Hon Keith Mitchell, held talks today with the Secretary of State in London where Dr. Mitchell asked Secretary Benn, to consider more funding for Grenada’s recovery efforts. Prime Minister Mitchell told Secretary Benn that the efforts to assist Asian countries affected by the tsunami should not detract from aid promised to Grenada. Prime Minister Mitchell and Secretary Benn also discussed budgetary support for Grenada. The Secretary of State has promised to explore the possibility of providing budgetary support for the next two years. During today’s meeting Dr. Mitchell updated the Secretary of State on the progress of Grenada’s reconstruction and recovery efforts and highlighted the fact that the tourism, agriculture and light industry sectors urgently needed assistance. Dr. Mitchell says he is pleased with the outcome of today’s meetings and thanked the British government for their continued support. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Grenada’s High Commissioner to the U.K., H.E. Joslyn Whiteman and Baroness Howells, a Grenadian who now sits in the House of Lords.
