Delegations from Martinique and Guadeloupe met with officials of the Agency for Reconstruction and Development Inc. (ARD) today (Tuesday, March 29) to discuss coordination of support from the Government of France in Grenadas rebuilding efforts. Dr. Denis Viart, Counsellor for Cooperation at the Embassy of France in St. Lucia; and Mr. Martin Lammert, French Regional Trade Director in Martinique, held discussions with ARD Chief Executive Officer Richardson Andrews, Director of Physical Infrastructure David James, Director of Economic Recovery Promil Paul and Senior Projects Manager Robin Swaisland. In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Andrews expressed appreciation for the keen interest of the French Antilles in helping Grenada rebuild. We are looking forward to a relationship that will not end with reconstruction, but will reflect the geographical closeness of Grenada, Martinique and Guadeloupe, Mr. Andrews said. Following these discussions, Dr. Viart, Mr. Lammert and the delegation from Gaudeloupe met with Mr. David James to discuss support in the area of urban planning. Accompanied by Honorary Consul for France to Grenada Maryse Taylor and Ministry of Works Architect Numa Rais, the delegation comprised Emmanuel Lancrerot, Charg d Etudes Principal and President of the Guadeloupe Urban Planners Association; Association members Sedar Cadrot, engineer; and Jacques Boutron, architect; as well as Guadeloupe Town Planner Nicholas Teboul. Discussions addressed ways by which Grenada can access support from the French Trust Fund, held at the Inter American Development Bank, that could provide financing for technical assistance and training in agriculture, health and education. Areas addressed for support directly from the Government of France included repairs to the Princess Alice Hospital in Mirabeau, St. Andrew; agricultural diversification, increased banana production and irrigation, as well as school reconstruction. It was agreed that the ARD, in collaboration with the relevant Government Ministries, would prepare project profiles to access the Fund.
